Altar Ego was a project conceived specifically for the city of Girona that combined culture, food and myth as vehicles for communication and participation. The proposal included the contribution of various groups and associations in the city to collectively create the festival of knowledge and flavors of Girona.
The project consisted of an exhibition at the Bòlit, Center d’Art Contemporani focused on the figure of a 17th century wooden Saint Cosmas that Miralda found in the Museu d’Història de Girona, twin’s orphan brother of Damian, both saints healers related to Castor and Pollux and venerated in traditions such as the Catholic, the Byzantine or the Yoruba. With the idea of finding a “double” twin of this icon, a call was made through the media in search of a Damien for Saint Cosmas and the image of the latter was reproduced in human size so that the visitors, converted in “Damianes” and “Damianas”, they could be photographed with him; in this way, the altar was transformed into a photo call. If, in addition, it coincided that the visitors were twins or someone was named Damien, they were given a gift signed by Miralda.
The altar/photo call was surrounded by the three apses of the building that were used as spaces for the offerings, where the public was invited to leave theirs: recipes, objects… In the center of the room was the Infinity Table, a table in the shape of an infinity that contained eight display cabinets with materials from Girona’s food culture. In the crypt, there was the installation “Oyeyà”, made up of a video and a totem. The exhibition was completed by a blackboard as a participatory space where people could leave recipes and other messages about the food and their experience.
The exhibition also had a program of activities that included the screening of documentaries, a session of Canto de los Gozos (Song of joys) of San Cosmas and San Damian and a rice contest accompanied by percussion that had the participation of different Senegalese cooks linked to associations of the region. Also, coinciding with the framework of the Ænvers Girona_Mapes Intangibles program, a trivet dedicated to Girona and Salt, a neighboring municipality, was printed in connection with the Sabores y Lenguas (Tastes & Tongues) project.
The opening ceremony of Altar Ego was added to the popular festival of Sant Pere (Saint Peter) organized by the residents of the neighborhood.
