PANlingua (2003)

Bread is possibly the most universal food that exists. It is among the rare foods called super-cultural. Framed within the collective project “Banquet, metabolism and communication”, of the Centro Cultural Conde Duque of Madrid, the “PANlingua” project raised a double invitation: to reflect on bread as a carrier of messages and on tongue as an organ of taste and , at the same time, as a communication system between cultures.

For this, two wood-fired ovens were installed in Conde Duque, where a large number of artisan bread rolls were made daily. Messages printed on paper were introduced into the mass, received from anywhere in the world and written in multiple languages, both through an online platform created for the occasion and on site. These breads were distributed in different establishments near the exhibition space.

PANlingua poetically emphasizes the inherent quality of food as a vehicle for cultural transmission, allowing a new means of communication to emerge from a piece of bread that, moreover, was edible.
